Made in Europe
This ecru canopy, measuring 55 × 63 in (140 × 160 cm), is intended for Eucharistic processions on Corpus Christi, during the octave and for the Easter Resurrection procession. Each of its four sides features a separate embroidery in a cartouche with red appliqués at the corners. The sides are joined by a continuous ornament of acanthus, vine and flowers, embroidered with gold, copper and olive thread. Gold fringe finishes the entire lower edge.
Four embroidered symbols on the Catholic processional canopy
Each embroidery is set in a cartouche with a red background in the corners and a gold border with a lace ornament.
- Chi Rho (☧): a Christogram formed from the first two letters of the Greek ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, surrounded by vine with grapes and wheat.
- IHS: a monogram in gold letters with wheat and a vine ornament.
- Communion chalice: accompanied by a gold paten and radiant altar bread, surrounded by vine with grapes and wheat.
- Sacred Heart of Jesus: shown with a crown of thorns and flames. Above the heart is wheat; around it are a vine with grapes and an acanthus ornament.
Satin, gold fringe and tunnels for four poles
The canopy is made from glossy 100% polyester satin with a stain-resistant finish. Gold fringe runs continuously along all four sides. The underside features an embroidered pelican, a traditional Eucharistic symbol of Christ giving his life for the faithful (John 6:51). Tunnels for poles are provided at the corners and along the sides; the poles, supplied as a set of 4, and the stiffeners are available separately. The canopy is normally carried by four people, one at each pole.
When to use the ecru canopy: Corpus Christi, the octave and the Resurrection procession
The ecru color is liturgically neutral and does not conflict with any of the celebrant’s vestment colors. The canopy is used during processions for Corpus Christi and throughout the octave (four processions to four altars), the Resurrection procession, and parish celebrations with exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It pairs with a white chasuble and gold cope.
