This four-piece altar linen set features a black chalice pall with gold Jerusalem cross embroidery. The white pieces are finished with black embroidered wave trim, which matches the pall in color and gives the set a cohesive look. Black is a liturgical color used during funeral Masses and on All Souls’ Day.
Gold Embroidery and Edge Finishes
The central decorative element is gold embroidery of the Jerusalem cross, a symbol also known as the cross of five crosses and associated with the five wounds of Christ. This embroidery appears on every piece in the set.
The black chalice pall has a wavy edge outlined in gold. The white pieces are trimmed with black embroidered wave trim, giving the set a solemn, mournful character appropriate to funeral liturgy.
Four Pieces in the Catholic Altar Linen Set
- Chalice pall: approx. 6 × 6 in (15 × 15 cm), black, with gold Jerusalem cross embroidery and a wavy edge outlined in gold. It is used to cover the chalice during the liturgy.
- Corporal: approx. 18.5 × 18.5 in (47 × 47 cm), white, with gold Jerusalem crosses in the corners and black embroidered wave trim. It is spread on the altar beneath the chalice and paten.
- Purificator: approx. 15.5 × 9.75 in (40 × 25 cm), white, with gold Jerusalem cross embroidery and black embroidered wave trim. It is used to wipe the chalice and paten during the liturgy.
- Lavabo towel: approx. 15.5 × 9.75 in (40 × 25 cm), white, with gold Jerusalem cross embroidery and black embroidered wave trim.
Black Liturgical Use for Funeral Masses and All Souls’ Day
Black is used as a liturgical color primarily during funeral Masses and on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (November 2). Since the liturgical reform, black has been optional and may be replaced with purple, but many parishes in Poland still choose a black altar linen set as a traditional element of mourning liturgy.
The set is packaged in an elegant gift box with a clear window. It may serve as a first-Mass gift or as a gift for a parish or religious community.
